Australia is the world’s largest island and its smallest continent. In the west is the Indian Ocean, in the east is the Pacifiс Ocean.
Australia is divided into six states and two territories. Australia lies in the southern Hemisphere, where winter comes in July usual temperatures are from 12°C to 20°C. In January the temperatures are from 20°C to 30°C above zero and higher. Most parts of Australia don’t receive enough rain. Only one sixth of the continent is inhabited. The population of the country is about 18 million people. The capital of Australia is Canberra. It is situated on the Australian Capital Territory, which occupies an area of 2,432 square km. the largest city is Sydney. It is situated in the South Wales, the leading industrial state.
Different farms, sheep stations and fruit gardens are situated in the Western Australia. Tasmania, the island state, is Australia’s leading producer of pears, apples and potatoes. The least developed part of Australia is the Northern Territory. Other states of Australia are the state Victoria, Queensland, South Australia.
There are a lot of birds and animals here. Here you can see the emu and the kangaroo. Australia is the home of two of the world’s most primitive mammals – the duckbill and the anteater. They are the only mammals that lay eggs. Another well-known animal is the koala that spends most of its life on trees. The European rabbits and buffaloes were brought from other continents in the 19th century. Here you can also see such beautiful birds as kookaburras, graceful lyrebirds, brilliantly colored parrots and the great white cockatoos.
I think that Australia is the most extraordinary country to explore.
