The Olympic Games are an international sports festival that began in ancient Greece. The original Greek games took place every fourth year for several hundred years.

In 394AD the Games were officially ended by the Roman emperor. They were renewed by Piere de Coubertin in 1896.

For the modern people the Games are a way of saluting the athletic talents of people of all nations. For two weeks and a half any international conflicts must be stopped and replaced with friendly competitions. This is the noble idea on which the modern Olympic movement is based.

The first modern Games were a success. They were in Greece. A second Olympiad was held in France in 1900. The first Winter Olympics were included in 1926. They were held in the same year as the Summer Games, but starting 1994, the Winter Games are held two years after the Summer Games. In September 2000 the Summer Olympic Games were held in Sydney, Australia. 11000 sportsmen from 199 countries took part in this Olympiad. Russian sportsmen won 32 golden medals, 28 silver and 28 bronze medals. They took the second place after the USA sportsmen. The Olympics are governed by the IOC , situated in Lausanne, Switzerland. It was set up in 1896. Russia joined the Olympic movement in 1952. In 1980 Moscow hosted the XXII Olympic Games.
